Charles William Stone's Parents
Harriet and William were married on 9 June 1834 in Charlton King, Gloucester, England.
WILLIAM and HARRIET STONE were Pub or Inn Keepers, and remained in England until their deaths. It is told that William Stone died young, and Harriet was very ill of T.B. And unable to care for her son, Charles. She had an uncle bring Charles, age 12, to Seaforth, Ontario, Canada. It is assumed the two resided in London, Ontario area. Later the uncle disappeared. He was a carpenter, howere, his carpenter tools and his watch were left where the two had resided. Foul play was suspected.
In one version, the Uncle had told Charles about the countryside, so he took what he could carry and rode a horse-drawn streetcar as far as he could; there he started walking out into the country. Charles fell in with some Quakers. Later, while walking the countryside, Mr. James McMartin, who had a team and wagon, gave Charles a ride to the McMartin home. Mr. McMartin, supposedly was a man of means. Mr. McMartin and his wife, Sophia Horton, were from New York. One of their children, LORETTA was born in Canada. She and Charles Wm Stone (he was using the name "William") were married 10 Mar 1862, against the wishes of her mother, at Bruce Co. Ontario Canada. This marriage information comes from ms248, reel 5. "Ontario Marriage Registration, Bruce Co." In this registration, William gives his place of birth at Whitby, England. Loretta lists her place of birth as Waterloo, Canada. Waterloo is a suburb of Kitchener. William lists his parents as "Wm and Harriet Stone" while Loretta lists hers as "Jas and Sophia McMartin" The name given as witness appears to be "Denis" McMartin. |
