CHARLES WILLIAM MILNER STONE married LORETTA MCMARTIN on 10 Mar 1862 in Bruce, Ontario, Canada. Loretta died 26 Dec 1902 in Sandusky, Michigan, at the home of a daughter. Charles and Loretta had 8 children: John, Thomas, James, Harriet, George, Hanna, Walter, and Ida. John, Tom, Jim and Harriet were born in Ontario, and the family came to Sanilac County, Michigan about 1869. It iss told they landed at London's Dock, Sanilac. In 1950, John Stone showed Cliff Hawes the general area where they resided in a log cabin near a grocery store and post office (the stage stopped there), on the west side of US-25, about 3/4 miles south of Applegate Road. Charles W supposedly managed London's Dock for two years. London's Dock was at Debien Creek, near Townsend Road, Sanilac Township. John Stone also mentioned they resided in a log cabin just south of Dr. Loop's big house (Museum), Port Sanilac, Michigan. Ruth Hawes says she also heard of a small white house in connection with Port Sanilac.
Charles then married ELIZABETH HINKLEY on 9 May 1904 in Carsonville, Michigan. After Charles married Elizabeth Hinkley in 1904, he operated The Marquette House, which was near the Depot in Carsonville, Michigan. Ruth Hawes writes that she also heard that fairs were held on property C.W. Owned west of the Depot. In 1905, Sanilac County Atlas lists the name Wm. Stone on a "Race Tract" there. His brick house is in that area in 1981. The same brick-layer worked on his Carsonville house and on the homes of Tom and Jim Stone in Washington Township, Walker Road. In 1981 they were still standing.
When Charles broke a leg and his eye-sight failing, he went to live at the home of his son Jim (James Henry) near Sandusky. C.W. also lived with Tom Stone and with Walt Stone, and died at Walt's in 1910.
Death record of Charles William Stone states cause of death as Arterial Sclerosis. He died at the age of 76.
